A crisis meeting was held in Townsville, Queensland, to address a spate of racist incidents in the region. Aboriginal parents and elders were prompted to call the meeting after Errol Wyles, a fifteen-year-old Aboriginal boy, was deliberately run over by a car. This was not the first involving a racially motivated hit and run attack on an Aboriginal victim, and the lack of response has angered many Aborigines in the community. The meeting explored the issue of chronic racism, citing many other tales of abuse, particularly of youths being beaten by skinheads and harassed at school.
