An Aboriginal Water Trust has been proposed in New South Wales that would serve to recognize Aboriginal stewardship of water areas. Aboriginal Land Council planning spokesman Phil Duncan said that the trust would not remove existing water rights - as no one owns the water, it would simply grant cultural and economic recognition of Aboriginal protection of water systems. Legislation regarding the trust is expected to come before the next sitting of the New South Wales Parliament, in September.
