Protests regarding the use of pictures of real people for target practice by police officers in Queensland, Australia, is causing controversy. Two of the twenty-eight pictures are of aboriginals, and indigenous leaders feel that the practice is detrimental to reconciliation efforts. Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson is defending the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) officers, stating that the photos help develop identification skills needed for SERT anti-terrorism training. Atkinson is in the minority, however, and indigenous leaders and Australian officials are calling for an investigation into the practice and a search for alternatives to using photos of people for target practice.
