The Algerian government has agreed to teach and promote Tamazight, the language of the Berber minority, in the country’s education system. Tamazight was recognized as an official language of Algeria, yet the president has said that the recognition of the language as an official one will require a change in the constitution. At present, Arabic is the only official state language.
