ALASKA: Yukon Native groups debate investment in gas pipeline

A new natural gas pipeline across Alaska may be built in the wake of the planned Mackenzie gas pipeline in Canada. If the project moves ahead, many Yukon Native groups are considering whether to invest in the project, following the example of the Canadian Aboriginal Pipeline Group, which has a one-third stake in the $3 billion Mackenzie line. Although the Alaskan project, at an estimated $20 billion, is far more expensive, Yukon Native groups likely have sufficient funds for part-ownership of the pipeline, as a result of land settlements finalized in the 1990’s.
