ALASKA: New Lego-style drilling platform technology could endanger native subsistence despite environmental promise

Houston-based Anadarko, Inc. has developed a new oil drilling platform made from interlocking pieces like Lego bricks that could be transported directly across the tundra and assembled onsite, allegedly obviating the need for ice roads to protect the tundra from the impact of heavy equipment. Although this technology may be more environmentally friendly in some respects, it will also lengthen the drilling season, and potentially endanger local caribou, an important species and food source for Alaska Native communities.
