For the first time, the United Nations is officially commemorating the International Day of Indigenous Women and Girls, 40 years after Indigenous organizations and movements established September 5 as a day of advocacy and recognition.

For generations, the Newar Peoples of the Kathmandu Valley have lived closely with nature. But today, beneath the capital city’s growing concrete landscape, a quiet crisis is unfolding. Rapid urbanization, rising temperatures, and unpredictable weather are doing more than harming the environment: they are erasing the centuries-old culture and way of life of the valley’s original inhabitants.

On June 27, 2026, the Hokkaido Association hosted an event in São Paulo, Brazil, dedicated to Ainu culture. The program featured a panel discussion with Allan Yzumizawa (Ainu), Gabriela Ichii (Ainu), and Umeno Morita (Ainu), followed by a traditional Ainu pattern painting workshop on textiles and garments, as well as a performance of traditional Ainu dance.
