The Basic Law for Indigenous People passed through Taiwan's legislature on Friday,
January 21. The law recognizes indigenous peoples autonomy on their designated
land and will help facilitate indigneous particpation in local governance by
funding specialized indigenous units in indigenous areas. It also states that
the government must provide funds to help develop indigenous languages, ensure
consent from indigenous people before establishing national parks or scenic areas,
and it prohibits forced removal of indigenous people from their land.
