The Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues has called for indigenous
organizations, nations, and non-governmental organizations to submit comments
and suggestions to formulate the program of action for the Second Decade on the
Worlds Indigenous People[s]. The information will form the basis of a report
by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the General Assembly at its
60th session. The deadline for comments and suggestions to the Secretariat is
April 20.
According to the General Assembly resolution, the goal of the Second Decade
ought to be the further strengthening of international cooperation for the
solution of problems faced by indigenous peoples in such areas as culture,
education, health, human rights, the environment and economic and social development,
by means of action-oriented programs and specific projects, increased technical
assistance and relevant standard-setting activities.
