WORLD: NGOs address U.N. Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

Non-governmental organizations from several countries addressed the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights to highlight the failures of governments in implementing the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. Several of the NGOs addressed issues affecting indigenous peoples. Three Greek NGOs spoke about discrimination against the Roma in access to housing and education, as well as displacement of Roma communities due to preparations for the Olympics. A representative of the Basque Observatory on Linguistic Rights accused Spain of criminalizing the Basque language.
