A statement released on April 19 by the EZLN warned that a conflict similar to that which occurred on April 11 in Zinacantan between Zapatista sympathizers and other locals which left over 30 injured, dozens displaced, and at least two dead, could occur in the Chiapan community of Motozintla. As in Zinacantan, Zapatista sympathizers in Motozintla have been denied water service since last year. Sympathizers presented a criminal complaint accusing Motozintla’s mayor of ordering local officials to destroy water and sewer connections to Zapatista supporters’ homes. Officials deny these claims.
