UNITED STATES: Movement to change controversial MN river name

The UN’s Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, as well as other national and international organizations, are supporting an effort to change the name of Minnesota’s “Rum River.” The current name is deemed derogatory by Native Americans as it was conceived by white men who ‘perverted’ its original Sioux name, a Lakota word meaning “sacred.”
