Senator Ted Stevens has proposed to end federal funding for Alaska’s tribal courts and police officers, shifting the several million dollars in Department of Justice grants to state court magistrates and Alaska’s Village Public Safety Officer program. David Chase, an Indian law attorney, claims that without tribal courts, many villages will be left without the means of handling low-level crime.
