SOUTHERN AFRICA: Renewed faith in indigenous agricultural practices

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a report detailing how HIV/AIDS and food insecurity can be combated in rural Africa with indigenous agricultural knowledge, rather than merely donor and NGO aid. Proposing strategies to improve nutrition, cope with labor constraints, and provide economic security of the HIV/AIDS stricken household, the report notes that “Efforts devoted to agro-biodiversity and indigenous knowledge...will ensure that rural youth and children have steady access to the resources and knowledge required to become good farmers, to farm successfully, and to confront the many challenges ahead.”
