On September 2, the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission announced that it had uncovered over 4000 unmarked graves dating from the period of the ‘dirty war’ between 1980 and 2000. Some graves contained the bodies of entire families, all victims of the same massacre. Due to the lack of census data in Andean indigenous communities, it will be difficult to identify the deceased. A spokesperson for the commission stated that 69,000 people were dead or missing.
