NEW ZEALAND: Not all Maori happy with the $700 million fishery settlement

The Ngai Tahu, a Maori group on New Zealand’s southern island, are displeased with the recent $700 million fisheries settlement and have begun legal action. The Ngai Tahu claim that the current settlement model disregards their property rights, which are guaranteed by the Treaty of Waitangi, and does not allocate adequate compensation to them. Fisheries Minister Pete Hodgson has been meeting with Ngai Tahu representatives to reach an agreement. According to Hodgson the model can still be modified, but the overall project is not in jeopardy.
