Despite long efforts to have Nunavik, the northern region of Quebec, recognized as a unique federal district in elections, the region will still be combined with the Vallée-de-l’Or and the James Bay Cree areas into one district. At issue is the claim that since Nunavik is largely Inuit, its distinct culture deserves to be recognized as an independent district in the electoral process. However, the area has only 10,000 residents, far short of the 72,375 needed according to current rules.
