Under a recent conservation measure, 1.7 million acres of forestland in the Russian Far East were designated as protected areas. The areas, located in the Amur River watershed, include Evenki “areas of traditional use”, which were also designated by the measure, and which will bar major industrial activity from the region. The Evenki have traditionally subsisted on hunting and reindeer herding in an area that includes parts of Russia, China and Mongolia.
