NIGERIA: Another Round of Violence in Fulani Settlements

At least ten people have been killed in clashes this week between Fulani pastoralists and Kwol and Miango natives in the Bassa area of Plateau State. Reports indicate that the conflict began when natives killed cows belonging to Fulani herders. Fulani communities have been the scenes of a number of deadly attacks in recent months, including one incident in which 15 people in a Jos South settlement were killed last December. In September 2001, riots and widespread violence between Fulani and Hausa settlers and the native people of Jos State in central Nigeria, fueled by religious tensions and election disputes, led to the deaths of at least 500 people.
