PERU: Ashaninkas attacked near border, according to FUNAI

A conflict on the border between Peru and Brazil has reportedly left three Ashaninka Indians dead. While hunting in the forest, an Ashaninka family was apparently attacked by Amowakans. According to a local representative of the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI), the Ashaninkas were greatly angered by the attack and have armed themselves in preparation for retaliation. Motives for this confrontation are under further investigation, as are allegations of an illegal mahogany industry in the region.
