Basque organizations are condemning the recent government raid on the offices of Egunkaria, the only Basque language daily newspaper. Behatokia, a Basque human rights organization, has issued a report on the crackdown, claiming that the paper was closed because of its commitment to providing “objective information about human and civil rights violations” and “for having carried out its work in a professional way.” Ten people, including staff members and affiliated individuals, remain in the custody of Spanish authorities since the raid.
