IRAQ: BBC film looks at risk war poses to ancient sites

On Sunday, February 2 at 9:00 pm, BBC Two will air a documentary examining the rich cultural heritage of Iraq. Upon the invitation of the Iraqi Ministry of Information, architectural historian Dan Cruickshank and a three-man film crew visited the ancient cities of Nineveh, Babylon and Ur, the legendary site of the Garden of Eden and the oldest Christian monastery. He discusses with local residents the risks that an attack on Iraq would pose to some of these fragile sites, as Saddam Hussein has built military bases near many of them, including Ur and the 2,000 year-old city of Hatra (a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site). Cruickshank found that Hatra and other sites had been neglected by officials, but were proudly and vigilantly looked after by local Bedouin.
