ENGLAND: New technology helps revive Cornish language

In an effort to help beginners learn the rapidly fading Cornish language, the language learning company Eurotalk has produced a lesson program on CD, currently for sale throughout England. The idea for enlisting the technology’s aid in making the language more accessible began at the first Cornish teaching school. The school’s head teacher noted that “finding a Cornish language teacher is difficult. This year our own teacher learned it herself so she could teach the children.” Cornish is a member of the Celtic family of languages; its speakers now number only around 400. Speakers who are non-fluent but able to converse are estimated at a few thousand.
