CANADA: Hummel takes case to Supreme Court

Racial issues rule yet again the day in the Canadian Judiciary System. Daniel Hummel, an aboriginal, is appealing to the Supreme Court after being convicted of raping and murdering Regina Thyrone, a non-indigenous Whitehorse accountant. The prosecution reputedly based its case upon racial stereotypes and misconceptions which portrayed Hummel as a “dirty Indian.” Although the prosecutor, Edward Horembala, maintains that his argument had nothing to do with race, the defense believes the trials were biased and that both the case and the judicial system warrant reevaluation. “This case is about ensuring that the discriminatory treatment received by aboriginal people within the Canadian criminal justice system comes to an end,” the filed argument says.
