CANADA: Survey shows ten percent of Inuit live in south; Inuktitut spoken widely

Statistics from Canada’s 2001 census show that one in ten Canadian Inuit live in southern Canada, with the highest numbers in Ottawa-Gatineau, Yellowknife, Edmonton, and other large cities. The total Inuit population was estimated at 45,070, a 12 percent increase from 1996. About 70 percent reported that they are capable of carrying on a conversation in Inuktitut. About half of all Canadian Inuit live in Nunavut, the territory created in 1999 by dividing the Northwest Territories.
