BRAZIL: Pioneering initiative to preserve the environment

The Enawene Nawe people, together with the local council in Juina, have created a partnership to initiate the Enawene Nawe Indigenous Territory Environment Protection Program. This project, backed by R$ 40,000 from a local ‘green’ tax, encourages Indians to protect their territory. The non-governmental organization Operacao Amazonia Nativa (OPAN), who has worked with the Nawe people for the past thirty years, provides sponsorship for this initiative.
