Two days of heavy fighting last week between Burmese troops and Karen National Union (KNU) fighters ended with at least 15 soldiers dead and about 700 Karen and 600 Thai villagers displaced. With sporadic fighting continuing, it is not clear when the Karen villagers will be able to return to their homes. For the time being the villagers are housed in a makeshift refugee camp near the international border.
