BOLIVIA: Indigenous political parties face internal division and cooption

After changing the face of Bolivian politics, Bolivia’s two largest indigenous parties are facing increasing turmoil. The reforms proposed in 2001 by Movement to Socialism (MAS) and the Pachakuti Indigenous Movement (MIP) still await legal implementation. The indigenous parties find it difficult to agree on a unified platform and receive little attention from the congress. Despite the hardships they have incurred, they remain a strong force of opposition in Bolivian politics.
