On Friday July 4, Bolivian soldiers and police force fired tear gas and rubber bullets at peasants illegally inhabiting land in eastern Bolivia. Throughout Bolivia landless peasants have been invading large haciendas and plantations, claiming that although the land is currently privately owned it belongs to the indigenous people. The government was engaged in dialogue with peasant leaders but has resorted to force, ending conversations of peaceful resolution.
