AUSTRALIA: Project works toward revival of Awabakal language

The Awabakal language has not been spoken in over one hundred years, but plans are in the works to revive it at Lake Macquarie. The project will restart the language using information recorded by the 19th century anthropologist Lancelot Thurkeld. Thurkeld documented the language in depth, recording words, grammar and pronunciation. The goal of the project is to use the language revitalization as a means to restore Awabakal cultural identity.
