BOLIVIA: Anti-Drug plan has repercussions for local communities

The peasants and farmers of Chimore as well as Latin and American scholars have denounced the presence of an Expeditionary Task Force unit accused of using excessive force and committing serious human rights abuses in violation of Bolivian law. Chimore is a town in the Bolivian Amazon inhabited by 2,000 people. “The Expeditionary Task Force is the name of an armed unit of 1,500 former Bolivian soldiers, paid, fed, clothed, and trained by the U.S. Embassy in la Paz, the Bolivian capital.” This is part of the United States’ campaign to eradicate coca in the region.
