UNITED STATES: Impact of casinos on Native American reservations

A Harvard University study released January 5 concludes that socio-economic conditions have greatly improved on Indian reservations during the last decade. The study illustrates that reservations with casinos had better economic and social conditions than those reservations without casinos.

In the study, researchers from the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development analyzed a decade of U.S. census material to evaluate Indian Country's income levels, education, and housing, reported Indianz.com. The per capita income rose 36 percent on gaming reservations but only 21 percent on reservations without casinos. The median household income on reservations with casinos increased 35 percent, but only 14 percent on non-gaming reservations.
