A land dispute at Saint Louis in Noumea has turned into a fierce battle between the indigenous Kanaks and Wallisians, who have settled from the French Pacific territory of Wallis and Futuna. Conflict over land has damaged reconciliation efforts between these two groups causing violent eruptions that resulted in injury of a police officer.
