CHINA: U.S. adds Uighur separatists to list of “terrorist” organizations

United States Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage announced on Monday that the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) will be placed on Washington’s list of “terrorist” organizations. ETIM has been fighting for the independence of the Xinjiang region, where ethnic Uighurs complain of repression by the Chinese government, including discrimination in employment and education and the silencing of peaceful dissent.
