BRAZIL: Illegal extraction of diamonds continues in Roosevelt Reserve

Over 2,500 diamond miners remain in the Roosevelt Indigenous Reserve after federal police occupied the area a year ago to try and remove them. Rights groups and indigenous leaders say that the number of police officers in the reserve is insufficient, and police are unable to monitor principal access roads. The reserve covers 3 million hectares of land belonging to the Cinta-Larga Indians, who often suffer from food shortages while illegal diamond extraction from the area generates huge profits for the operators.
