Flawed FPIC in Brazil`s FICO Railway Project Raises Alarms

Scholars denounce serious violations of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in Brazil, arguing that FUNAI's handling of consultations around the FICO railway has compromised the rights of multiple Indigenous communities affected by this major infrastructure project.

Scholars from the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America (SALSA), an international scholarly organization composed of professors, students, and practitioners warn in a statement that FUNAI (Indigenous People Government Agency)’s fragmented handling of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in the FICO railway process is undermining the rights of multiple Indigenous Peoples communities affected by one of Brazil`s largest infrastructure projects going unchecked.
