SPAIN: Basque language paper shut down, sparking protests

Spanish police have closed the offices of Egunkaria, the only daily newspaper to publish in Euskera, the Basque language. Ten people at the offices were arrested, and are being held under anti-terrorism legislation. Police charge that Egunkaria sympathized with the Basque separatist group ETA, tipping it off to police operations. This week, the editors of the paper tried to publish under another name – “Egunero” or “Every Day” – but officials responded by freezing the paper’s assets and continue to detain staff. Thousands marched in the streets of San Sebastian last weekend to protest the government’s action, and its interrogations of staff from other Basque-language publications.
