RUSSIA: Previously unknown indigenous group encountered

The Chalymtsy, an ethnic group previously unknown to ethnographers and anthropologists, was recently ‘discovered’ by census-takers in the Taimyr Autonomous Okrug in northern Russia. Radio Rossii reported the news on October 1, claiming that there are about 130 indigenous Chalymtsy living in the remote village of Pasechnoe, where they are engaged in subsistence farming and hunting. According to the report, they apparently know little of their own history.
