A law banning all forms of discrimination, whether based on ethnic, gender, age or religion, was passed on Monday after several months of congressional debate. This new generalized legislation replaces nearly a dozen smaller proposals banning more selective types of discrimination that have been languishing for years in the legislature. While the law does not specify the manner in which the prohibition of discrimination and enforcement will occur, the duty will likely fall to the new National Commission for the Prevention of Discrimination, a group that will replace a previous, smaller anti-discrimination commission created by President Vincente Fox upon taking office in 2000.
