DRC: Illegal coltan trade continues to wreak havoc

A Belgian commission of inquiry was set up last November for a six-month period to investigate the impacts of illegal mineral exploitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Researchers have recently presented evidence before the commission that confirms the coltan trade between rebels in eastern Congo and foreign companies fueling the civil war. The exploitation of coltan has been shown to have devastating consequences for indigenous peoples and wildlife in the region.
