Indigenous Communities Celebrate Their Identities Through Food


October 16th is World Food Day. On this day, millions of people around the world participate in efforts to showcase their unique connections with cuisine, and to demonstrate their relationship with food. Initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, World Food Day is one of the most celebrated days on the UN calendar.
 

Celebrate Your Indigenous Identity with Food!

On World Food Day, Indigenous Peoples from Asia and Pan-pacific are gathering at Hokkaido, the land of the Ainu, the only Indigenous Peoples recognized officially in Japan. This radio program depicts what World Food Day means to Indigenous Peoples.
 

October 16th is World Food Day!
Hunger and obesity often co-exists in countries where a home cooked meal is far more difficult to attain than fast food, processed food, and foods that are high in sugar. In line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the theme for 2019 World Food Day is "Healthy Diets for a Zero Hunger World." In this program, we speak to Indigenous people to see how they contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 2, which talks about ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Indigenous Terra Madre Conference
Terra Madre means "Mother Earth" in Latin. The theme of the Indigenous Terra Madre conference was to celebrate the bio and cultural diversity that is the asset of Indigenous communities. The aim of this gathering is to share ideas, to come together to be inspired  and to make people aware of our local food systems.
