WORLD: UN Second Decade funding opportunity

Project proposals relating to activities for the Second International Decade of the World's Indigenous People must be submitted to the UN Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues by January 15, 2006. Proposed projects should advance the goal of the Second International Decade, which is to "strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous peoples in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, social and economic development, by mean of action-oriented programs and specific projects, increased technical assistance and relevant standard-setting activities." Grants will be awarded in amounts up to US $10,000; multi-year project grants will not exceed US$50,000.

Applicants should be representatives of indigenous peoples' organizations, nongovernmental organizations, national committees for the Second International Decade, or any other nonprofit group. Project proposals are limited to a maximum of 10 pages and should include a projected budget in realistic local cost and salary. To be eligible, projects must be prepared by the targeted indigenous peoples, or have indigenous peoples' consultation. Priority will be given to projects from underdeveloped areas in a variety of geographic regions.
