A UN-sponsored environmental conference has adopted global guidelines to encourage major pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to pay indigenous communities for the use of native plants to make drugs and cosmetic products. The global guidelines seek to end biopiracy in many developing countries and recognize indigenous peoples’ inalienable rights.
