The Central Highlands region of Vietnam is home to the indigenous Degar people, also known as Montagnards. It is an area under martial law where human rights abuses committed by Vietnam Security forces are common. Montagnard women have reported that they have been forced to meet with Vietnamese authorities who demanded the women get surgically sterilized. The demands come with force, bribery, or threats. So far over one thousand women have reported the demands to undergo the sterilization. The Montagnard Foundation, a human rights group based in the United States, believes that this is a form of ethnic cleansing.
