UNITED STATES: Yankton Sioux protest desecration of sacred sites in South Dakota

Activists are calling for a boycott of the state of South Dakota after a dispute that has arisen in recent weeks between members of the Yankton Sioux Tribe and state officials in charge of excavations in the North Point Recreation Area, on a Native burial ground on the Missouri River where many remains have been found. Tribal members filed a motion in federal court against the state after the remains were found by contractors during construction for a new building. The state was ordered to return the remains to the original site, but tribal members claim the work has been rushed, and state workers have not allowed them proper time to search through the dirt for remains and give them proper re-burial. A federal judge heard testimony from both sides last week, and called on them to reach an agreement on the return of the remains. Protestors at the site are angry that the state has authorized bulldozing of sacred sites in order to construct “R.V. sewage dumps” and “parking lots”.
