UNITED STATES: Wildfire rages near Taos Pueblo

Since Friday night, a raging wildfire in New Mexico has claimed 2,500 acres of pueblo forest and the adjacent Carson National Forest, threatening to pollute the Rio Pueblo and Blue Lake. The river and lake supply the pueblo’s 1,500 residents with drinking water but are also held sacred by the Pueblo tribe. Firefighters said on Monday that the historic adobes of Taos Pueblo should be safe from the flames; however, the loss of tourism has already impacted the tribe. The fire is still burning strong and the weather is expected to remain hot, dry, and breezy through the week.
