UNITED STATES: Western Shoshone livestock seized by government

The Associated Press reports that the Bureau of Land Management has finished seizing cattle and horses owned by Western Shoshone sisters Mary and Carrie Dann in the latest episode of a decade-long land dispute. The government claims that the sisters have been illegally grazing hundreds of animals on federal property, with a negative impact on the land and other ranchers who have grazing permits. The Danns say that the land still belongs to the Western Shoshone tribe, according to a 1863 treaty. More than 530 horses were taken off the ranch and will be placed in a ranch in Southern California.
