Governor Mark Sanford signed a bill on July 2 finally allowing tribes to apply for recognition in South Carolina. Among the state’s criteria are a minimum of 150 members and a continuous presence in the state over the past 100 years. The legislation also clearly states that recognition provides no basis to establish gambling or claim land. Tribe members are happy with the opportunity to be recognized, many hoping that state recognition will help their bids for federal recognition.
