Rates of student victimization have decreased for all ethnic and racial groups
except for American Indian students, according to a November 29 report from the
U.S. Department of Education. The rate of violence increased nine percent between
1999 and 2003, when over 22 percent of American Indian students were threatened
by a weapon while on school property. According to Indianz.com, 12.9 percent
of Native youth carry weapons while on school property, and 29.3 percent carry
weapons outside of school property. These rates are higher than those for any
other ethnic group in the United States, the website reports.
