The American Indian Movement of Florida is demanding that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office ensure the protection of the heavily looted indigenous cemetery in Titusville known as Indian Station. The cemetery has been the scene of repeated desecration and lootings since 1867. On April 19, 2003 amateur archaeologists and the Brevard County AIM Support Group worked to clean up illegal dumping that occurred on the property and found extensive looting had taken place. Florida AIM has expressed frustration that despite a state law enacted to protect indigenous burial sites, it has never been used to prosecute grave robbers. If actions are not taken by the Sheriff’s Office to protect the cemetery per state law, the Florida AIM says it is prepared to take whatever action is necessary to protect the cemetery.
